50+ HOUSING COUNCIL IS BOOMING,
CHAGES NAME TO "50+ HOUSING COUNCIL"

For immediate release
IRVINE, Calif. — July 7, 2011 — In order to keep up with the changing demographics of today’s aging adults, the 50+ Housing Council of the Building Industry Association of Southern California has fittingly changed its name to the 55+ Housing Council. The council’s website url has also been renamed as www.55SoCal.com.

With this name change the Council intends to eliminate confusion regarding the minimum age restrictions in communities permissible under the Fair Housing law (age 55 and over in the case of communities specifically designed for this market segment).

This is the second name change in the council’s 21-year history. Formed in 1990 as a special interest council of the Building Industry Association of Southern California, the “Seniors Housing Council” was the first local chapter of the national organization of the same name.  Five years ago, the national and local councils were renamed “50+ Housing Council” to better encompass those involved in building for-sale homes for “Boomers” in addition to the generally older and/or care-oriented segments of the seniors housing continuum (e.g., assisted living and senior apartments).

The 55+ Housing Council of Southern California “SoCal” is the largest of 15+ local chapters in the country organized under the national parent council, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) 50+ Housing Council. The Council provides networking, education and partnering prospects for Southern California professionals involved in every aspect of building housing specifically for 55+ markets including active adult, age-targeted, senior condos, 55+ apartments, CCRCs, Assisted Living, Alzheimer's care and more.

The 55+ Housing Council of SoCal meets monthly, typically drawing more than 100 attendees to educational programs and tours focusing on this booming segment of the housing market.  55+ Housing Council members enjoy: monthly meetings, tours, and educational conferences featuring top industry leaders – all at discounted prices; Industry news and information; and Networking with professionals spanning the spectrum of 55+ housing.

For more information about the 55+ Housing Council or to inquire about membership please call 949.553.9500 or visit them on the web at www.55SoCal.com.
